The chair of the UK Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has called it 'extraordinary' that the Department for Work and Pensions awarded Capita a £370 million shared services contract covering HR, finance, and payroll for multiple government departments, given Capita's ongoing failures running the Civil Service Pension Scheme. Since taking over the pension scheme in December, Capita has left ~1.5 million current and former civil servants unable to access their accounts, and retired civil servants have had pension payments delayed or missed entirely. The PAC chair has written to the Cabinet Office asking whether DWP was informed of Capita's poor performance before making the award. The contract's true value is disputed, with figures ranging from £370 million to £700 million, with the official notice citing £606.6 million.
