Social VR gaming platform Rec Room has announced it will shut down on June 1, 2026. Developer Rec Room Inc. cited an inability to achieve sustainable profitability, with costs consistently outpacing revenue. The closure follows a major layoff of roughly half the company's staff last August. From June 1, players will lose access to the platform entirely. The company, founded in 2016 and once valued at $3.5 billion after a $145 million funding round in 2021, acknowledged leadership failures in aligning business needs with player and team realities.
