Volkswagen's autonomous mobility unit MOIA America and Uber have begun on-road testing in Los Angeles with approximately 10 autonomous ID. Buzz AD vehicles. Each vehicle carries a human safety operator during this initial phase. The ID. Buzz AD is equipped with a 27-sensor suite (13 cameras, 9 LiDAR units, 5 radars) powered by Mobileye Drive. The commercial timeline targets paid rides with safety operators by end of 2026 and fully driverless service in 2027, scaling to 500+ vehicles in LA by Q3 2027. Uber acts as the distribution platform while MOIA provides the technology and vehicles. LA was chosen partly because Waymo already operates there at scale, setting a clear performance benchmark. MOIA brings operational experience from its Hamburg ride-pooling service, which has transported over 10 million passengers since 2019.
