A new ransomware-as-a-service called VolkLocker, operated by pro-Russian hacktivist group CyberVolk, contains a critical implementation flaw that allows free decryption. The ransomware, written in Golang and targeting Windows and Linux systems, hard-codes master encryption keys in its binaries and saves them to a plaintext file that is never deleted. Despite using AES-256-GCM encryption and including typical ransomware features like shadow copy deletion and a 48-hour payment deadline with data wipe enforcement, the design blunder enables victims to recover files without paying. CyberVolk sells the ransomware through Telegram for $800-$2,200 depending on platform support.
