Airbnb open-sourced Viaduct, their data-oriented service mesh that has grown 8x in traffic over five years. The platform serves a central GraphQL schema with hosted business logic through a re-entrant API, supporting 130+ teams and 1.5M lines of code. Viaduct Modern introduces a simplified tenant API with just two resolver types, stronger modularity boundaries, and a new engine architecture that separates dynamically-typed execution from statically-typed developer interfaces. The system enables gradual migration by supporting both Classic and Modern APIs simultaneously.
