Airbnb has released Viaduct 1.0, transitioning it from an internal tool to a community-driven, production-ready open source project. Viaduct is a data-oriented service mesh built on GraphQL that enables decentralized development of a central schema through a multi-tenant module architecture. Unlike GraphQL Federation, which distributes development via separate subgraph servers, Viaduct distributes development via modules hosted in a shared runtime — reducing operational overhead while still being composable with federated architectures. The 1.0 release brings a stable public API with @StableApi/@ExperimentalApi/@InternalApi annotations, binary compatibility validation in CI, Maven Central publishing, and automated releases. Airbnb is committing to open community governance including public RFCs before major architectural decisions.
