Clean Code is a valuable book but its principles are often misapplied as universal rules rather than contextual tradeoffs. Readability matters, but it is just one constraint among many in software engineering. DRY, immutability, and abstraction all have costs depending on context. Good engineers understand the tradeoffs they are making, not how strictly they follow a single philosophy.

This is one of the books where you have to pick an choose advice. Especially the unit testing chapter was really formative in my early career. But in terms of readability, the book is often too radical and even sometimes contradicts itself (looking at you, functions that should never exceed five lines).

Clickbait title… Just another useless blogger selecting parts of the book he does not like and then misunderstanding the whole idea. Clean Code has never been a ruleset rather then guidelines for high quality code.

My 2 cents: Go read clean code rather than this article, save your life and colleagues one :)

I read the book early in my career on the advice of my senior. I have to admit, I can’t quite apply all the principles because it’s sometimes really difficult to apply them to the software I work on.
But I have to thank them because they’ve often allowed me to identify critical code that needed refactoring. And unfortunately, working in small to medium-sized companies, these critical issues are common.
So yes, thanks, Uncle Bob, I’ll take what you told me and use what I need.

The business impact angle is underrated. Perfect code that ships late is still a problem.
