Valve has discontinued manufacturing the Index VR headset, originally released in 2019 as a high-end tethered PC VR solution with lighthouse base station tracking. The company is transitioning to the Steam Frame, a new wireless VR headset launching in early 2026 that streams games from PC via a 6GHz adapter and can run Windows games locally using an Arm chip. The Frame features improved specs including 2160 x 2160 per-eye resolution compared to the Index's 1440 x 1600, uses camera-based inside-out tracking instead of lighthouse base stations, and will be priced below the Index's $999 cost.
