It deprives developers of learning opportunities and may lead to skill atrophy, making them reliant on tools that could eventually replace them. There are also potential legal ambiguities surrounding the ownership of AI-generated code. Lastly, using AI for coding might result in less respect from peers and reduce the pride taken in one's work.

I kinda agree with all your claims, but I struggle coming to the same conclusion. At the end of the day it’s a superpower and you can’t just ignore it. There must be some kind of middle, though I can’t see it yet.

I disagree with this. This LLM + Programming thing is like nothing we’ve seen before, and we don’t really know what to expect from the future.
Yes coding skills might atrophy if you don’t use it, but the possibility that an LLM will simply write better code than you even if your skills DIDN’T atrophy is a realistic concern.
I mean your skills are atrophying because your not using them, and your not using them because you don’t need them anymore. That itself should tell you where this is going.
Your last paragraph, about drinking cool-aid etc, is a bit dismissive, without any right to be. You’re turning into a ‘back in my day’ guy in real time.
Yes, I know the crypto charlatans and ‘business class’ moved from defi to LLMs without dropping a beat, these people will move and over-hype whatever is the latest ‘thing’. But that’s not a reason to hate or doubt whatever they like as a knee jerk reaction. I’m sure the same charlatans would’ve gone around hyping up electricity and the steam engine, but you’d be a fool to claim that’s ‘cool-aid’ just because they like it.

AI for coding = great mentor, somewhat good QA. If you know what it talks about. If you don’t, AI generated code is useless to you anyway. And AI writing the whole app is still a utopy.
