A conference talk from NDC London 2026 introducing usability testing to developers and QA engineers. The speaker, a developer-turned-UX-researcher, argues that qualitative usability testing with just 5 participants can uncover ~85% of usability problems cheaply and quickly. The talk covers the full process: recruiting the right (non-technical) participants using indirect screening questions, defining research questions across four types (usability, findability, discoverability, engagement), crafting unbiased tasks, facilitating sessions without guiding participants, and iterating findings on a visual board for stakeholder buy-in. Key takeaways include always recording sessions, using the term 'activity' instead of 'task', turning off your video during testing, and the mantra that developers are not representative users.
