A major AWS outage in the US-EAST-1 region caused widespread service disruptions across thousands of companies including Netflix, Reddit, and PlayStation. The root cause was a DNS resolution failure affecting API endpoints, particularly DynamoDB, which cascaded into serverless job queues. The incident highlights the risks of centralized cloud infrastructure dependency and the challenges of single-provider reliance even with availability zones designed for redundancy.

I was a Victim of this outage because I host my DB in Supabase, my frontend in Vercel, and even my Backend in AWS, and I was enjoying my favorite Seasons on Netflix

I imagine poor fellas in the US had to wake up by all the pagerduty calls…

Decentralisation of infrastructure is the learning. Keeping all the eggs in the same basket can lead to such tragedy. Multi cloud strategy and geo replication is need of the hour. I wonder if this is where the current tech stands, what would happen if AI would have been deploying such critical infrastructure, who would be accountable in that scenario ? At least here we know it was a software update that messed up the DNS resolution and engineers would be held accountable for it.

Who knew one DNS hiccup could remind half the internet who’s really in charge.
