Unveiling the Waitlist Illusion

Waitlists are a popular but often misleading validation tool for indie hackers and founders. They collect low-commitment interest rather than real demand, assume distribution already exists, and frequently produce false signals β hundreds of signups that never convert to customers. Waitlists can work for hype-driven products, exclusive communities, or founders with existing audiences. To make them useful, ask qualifying questions, segment signups, engage regularly, and measure actual engagement. Better alternatives include pre-selling, shipping an MVP fast, having direct user conversations, and running small paid tests. True validation comes from behavior and payment, not form fills.
