Unreal Engine 5.8 Preview is now available via the Epic Games Launcher, GitHub, and Linux. Key highlights include the experimental Mesh Terrain feature for building massive 3D-mesh-based environments with native PCG integration, improvements to the Procedural Content Generation framework allowing manual edits on procedural content, and a revamped Procedural Vegetation Editor for creating Nanite-ready vegetation assets. The MetaHuman Crowd plugin now supports scaling from tens to thousands of characters, while MegaLights reaches full production readiness with improved performance on current-gen consoles. Control Rig Physics moves to Beta, and facial rigging tools have been expanded. Additional improvements span production rendering, virtual production, Chaos Physics, and mobile workflows. As a preview release, it is considered unstable and not recommended for active project conversion.
