Well, the problem with this is that UNIX philosophy was designed to be applied to UNIX and not everywhere else. The reason for applying it elsewhere was quite simple: we have a good ruleset, let’s try repeating it in other areas.
The whole article seems to be based on the concept that applying UNIX phylosophy, KISS/DRY rules, etc. is somewhat mandatory, when in reality it’s always a matter of analyzing the problem first, weighting in on the pros and cons and only then applying anything be it phylosophies, patterns, rules, etc. - software engineering 101.

It’s not harsh, it’s normal - apply the right tool for the job. Sometimes there’s just that one workflow that works best and then the tooling follows. For instance, that’s why we have IDEs - to make development workflow faster in a single tools instead of a multitude of terminals, each with a different role (text editing, compiling, testing, etc.). Yeah, I know - some prefer it that way. I kind of do too, regardless of using an IDE.

Unless you’re stuck in the 80s, the world has moved on a long ago from CLI to UI for regular users. CLI is still popular with devs, sysadmins, devops, etc. where these tools matter. So, yes, that’s a things not even worth mentioning.

Juniors, mids perhaps. Seniors know the “golden hammer” rule and know there’s no single solution. Otherwise we would have one CRM system, one ERP system, heck, even one scheduler in the Liunx kernel or one garbage collector in the JVM. And we wouldn’t have a multitude of algorithms and design patterns. Oversimplification or projection right here - take your pick.

Oh, boy. Comparing a dock to a taskbar - these are two different UI components with clearly different functionality. It’s kind of hard to say “copycat” here. Just to be really clear on this one: copycat era was Macintosh vs early Windows versions (e.g. version 2 or 3). The taskbar was introduced in Windows 95 in 1995, while the dock was introduced in year 2000 in MacOS X. You could argue NewtonOS had a “button bar” earlier, but that 1997 - still 2 years later than Windows. So, where’s the mimicry?
Ok, while this is an interesting opinion, it’s clearly very subjective and generalised. The main premise being “the IT world found it’s golden hammers and it refuses to let go of them”. While it might look like this in some cases, the IT world is much more diverse than that. 🙂
