But a new version of the course, CS 106J, is based on JavaScript. It covers the same material as CS 106A but does so using JavaScript.

Author is missing various key points. Java is not a bad introductory language. It teaches students vital background information such as code compilation and datatypes. The described bloatedness is, in my eyes, also advantageous for beginners.

For me, I started from C++ and then switched to Java (prominently because I was into Android development).
