Universal Basic Income (UBI) is criticized for offering financial support without addressing the need for purpose that work provides. AI's potential to replace jobs may drive further discussion on UBI, but the pursuit of meaning beyond financial security is deemed vital. The debate considers how UBI could fail to fulfill deeper human needs, unlike the challenges and purposes currently offered by work.

Universal Basic Dead End

I think the author overcomplicates it. UBI would likely only offer subsistence rather than true fulfillment and thriving. I believe there will still be incredible challenges ahead for the majority of people, but UBI would eliminate a lot of pointless suffering and also inefficiencies (In terms of human effort) in the economic system by eliminating lower paid jobs.
Secondly the author is happily engaging in ivory tower philosophy without considering that the majority of human decisions throughout history have been because of necessity and immediate concerns, rather than well thought out, considered, long term plans. When AI and robotics lay off a majority of the workforce, it is necessity that will require UBI (Either that or some way to get ‘rid’ of the masses, a thought so unpalatable that I prefer to avoid it).

I totally understand this now. I’m currently stuck in a job where I spend 95% of my time doing absolutely nothing, and it’s slowly getting to me. Getting money without having to do anything sounds nice, but it feels very wrong.

The shallow opinion of someone who never deeply studied the subject.

Here are examples of purposes that do not require a job : raising a kid, making sure old and disabled people are not lonely, travelling and exploring the world, helping to decide what to build with our amazing technology that put everyone out of a job.
Work is far from being the only source of purpose in this world, and your examples of people disliking idleness seem more like a problem of loneliness (and maybe also shame and guilt) as they found themselves alone while everybody else was working.

This author seems to misappropriate the totality of human purpose with the modern understanding of employment (ergo, “work”). This premise is erroneous, because people are currently forced to have employment to survive, and for many, the job isn’t fulfilling in any way whatsoever. For a lucky few, their passion aligns with their employment, but for the much greater majority, this isn’t the case. It is simply a means to an end, a method to earn money. Everyone has passions and hobbies that do fulfill them, and if given the chance they would pursue those, and most assuredly if the requirement of employment was removed.
“Work” is simply the application of effort, it doesn’t necessarily mean employment as the author intends, and it certainly isn’t the only place where someone can be fulfilled by “work”.
UBI is unfeasible in the long term due to the impossibility of adequately funding it (and increasingly so as the tax base is eroded by AI and automation), not by removing the so called “value of work” through employment.
