A question as old as time, which game engine should I use, Unity or Godot?  This is certainly an emotionally charged topic and one we are going to attempt as unbiased as possible to hopefully help you decide which of these game engines is right for you.  We look at 6 Pros and 3 Cons of choosing the Unity or Godot game engines. Godot offers complete freedom as open-source software, rapid development pace, multiple programming language support, passionate community, excellent 2D tooling, and minimal footprint, while struggling with less hardware support, unproven track record, and potential leadership concerns. The analysis suggests Unity has advantages for 3D and console development, while Godot shines for 2D games and cost-conscious developers.

Unity or Godot in 2025 - Which Game Engine is Right for You?

The most important factors, for me, are these:

<li>The Godot engine is free.</li>
<li>The Unity engine is not free, and the price has been unreliable.</li>
<li>There are many other free engines.</li>
<li>There are many other paid engines.</li>
</ol>
The Unity corporation also has a track record of buying companies to incorporate their assets into the Unity engine, and then never, barely, or rarely updating those assets. And then buying another company for replacement assets.
It is good to forgive. It is wise to delay trust until the change in behaviour is proven real.
