Google Cloud Storage has introduced hierarchical namespace (HNS) as a new bucket creation option, enhancing performance, consistency, and manageability for data-intensive and file-oriented applications. Unlike the previous flat namespace, HNS organizes buckets into a tree-like structure with folders and objects, enabling fast and atomic operations such as renaming folders. HNS supports new APIs tailored for file-oriented storage and integrates with Hadoop/Spark workloads and Cloud Storage FUSE. However, it is currently in public preview, supports only non-production workloads, and lacks certain Cloud Storage features. Users can get started via CLI, client libraries, Cloud Storage Connector, and Cloud Storage FUSE.
