Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, has joined the Rust Foundation as a Gold Member, a $150k/year membership tier. This follows Canonical's increasing adoption of Rust in Ubuntu, including shipping Rust-based Coreutils (uutils) in place of GNU Coreutils on Ubuntu 25.10+ and other Rust system tooling. The move comes ahead of the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release, which will include the latest Rust compiler and Cargo. Gold membership provides access to the Rust Foundation Board of Directors and other benefits, sitting below the Platinum tier backed by Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.
