Canonical has released Ubuntu Core 26, a long-term support immutable snap-based OS targeting IoT, robotics, and edge computing. Key improvements include OTA update sizes reduced by up to 90% via a new snap-delta format (Core base snaps drop from 16 MB to 1.5 MB), faster installation by skipping redundant reboots, and live kernel patching now extended to ARM64 devices. The base image is 7% smaller thanks to a new Chisel-based build system with traceable dependencies. Ubuntu Frame gains multi-app support with configurable layouts and GPU acceleration via a new snap interface. Additional features include Snapcraft components for optional resources, OP-TEE integration for ARM TrustZone key protection, TPM-sealed keys in LUKS2, EU Cyber Resilience Act compliance, and observability streaming to Grafana, Loki, and Prometheus.
