Canonical engineers are proposing to strip several features from the signed version of GRUB in Ubuntu 26.10, targeting filesystems like btrfs, ZFS, XFS, and HFS+ for /boot, as well as LUKS-encrypted /boot partitions, LVM, most software RAID configurations, and image parsers. The primary motivation is security: GRUB runs before Linux and any bug in its components can be exploited even if Ubuntu doesn't use them. The change would mainly affect users with complex, manually configured boot setups — standard installs using the OS installer's defaults are unlikely to be impacted. However, controversy exists around removing LUKS support and the fact that some official Ubuntu server configurations using LVM could also be affected. The proposal is still under debate, with the interim 26.10 release serving as a testing ground before the next LTS.
