Ubuntu 26.04 LTS brings a wide range of changes. Visual updates include accent-colored folder icons, a refreshed Yaru theme closer to Adwaita, and a non-translucent dock. Key functional changes include switching to a Rust-based sudo replacement for improved memory safety, password asterisk feedback in the terminal, and a new default terminal (Ptyxis) and system monitor (Resources). Packages are now compiled for AMD64 v3 architecture for potential performance gains on modern CPUs. The software-properties GUI is removed by default, limiting graphical repo management. Telemetry is now opt-in. Ubuntu 26.04 ships GNOME 50, which drops X11 entirely (Wayland-only), brings major Nautilus improvements, headless remote desktop sessions with zero-copy rendering, better NVIDIA support, parental controls, and more. Under the hood, the kernel is Linux 7.0, initramfs switches to dracut, and removable media now mounts under /run/media.
