Ubuntu 26.04 LTS 'Resolute Raccoon', due April 23, 2026, will ship with OpenJDK 25 as its default Java version, replacing OpenJDK 21 used since Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The switch aligns both LTS release cycles. OpenJDK 25 brings improvements to memory efficiency, garbage collection, and ahead-of-time profiling for faster startup, along with several language features reaching stable status. Java is not pre-installed on Ubuntu, but the default-jdk and default-jre meta-packages will point to OpenJDK 25. Canonical engineers are currently resolving a handful of build failures in dependent packages, with new packages being uploaded to the proposed repository.
