Canonical's Authd authentication daemon is officially entering the Ubuntu archive for the first time with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, available in the universe repository. Previously only accessible via a Canonical PPA or source builds, Authd enables Ubuntu systems to authenticate users against cloud identity providers using OpenID Connect. It currently supports Microsoft Entra ID and Google Cloud IAM, with a modular design allowing additional providers. Authd development will follow Ubuntu's release cadence and is supported under the LTS lifecycle. The daemon is written in Go and Rust and is open-source on GitHub.
