Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) has reached the end of its five-year Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM) window in April 2026. Organizations still running 16.04 have two options: upgrade progressively to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, or activate the Legacy add-on for Ubuntu Pro, which extends security maintenance for an additional five years (until April 2031). The Legacy add-on covers security patches for the Linux kernel, critical packages like MySQL 5.7, Python 2.7, PostgreSQL 9.5, and NGINX 1.10, plus OpenStack Mitaka support. It is aimed at organizations with complex hardware, proprietary stacks, or regulatory requirements that prevent immediate migration.
