Typst is a modern document composition tool designed as an alternative to LaTeX for academic writing. It features real-time formatting, browser-based collaboration, community templates, and intuitive syntax for mathematical formulas. The open-source tool aims to simplify paper writing with instant preview, team workspaces, and a learning curve of under 60 minutes for most users.

Typst is a modern typesetting language written in Rust. It can be used as an alternative to the widely adopted LaTeX. Typst offers a simple and easy to learn syntax oriented at ASCIIdoc and Markdown. In contrast to LaTeX Typst offers several advantages:

**Scripting capabilities**: Typst can dynamically load data from markup files such as JSON, YAML and CBOR. Loops, Conditions, pure Functions and Datastructures like Maps and Arrays allow for complex automation in document generation.

**Speed**: Converting previous works from LaTeX to Typst gave me huge improvements in compilation time. From about 1:30 minutes to 30 seconds for a 120 pages document with table of contents, linked acronyms, citations and images. 

**Simple Setup**: All required is just the CLI application making it a "just works" solution. With bare LaTeX a complicated multi stage build pipeline needs to be setup for complex documents. 

**Plugins**: Developers can package custom plugins in Web Assembly allowing for pure and cross platform additions to the core language. Plugins allow for using templates (such as for IEEE papers), generating graphs and even adding coffee stains.

For now Typst is under active development and breaking changes may occur. So far I have authored all my papers written for university in Typst during which it has proven to be a fun and reliable solution.
