Trisquel 12.0 has been released, a Free Software Foundation (FSF)-approved Linux distribution built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. It runs the GNU Linux-libre 6.8 kernel, which strips out non-free firmware and microcode, limiting hardware support. The release ships with the MATE 1.26.1 desktop environment and adds GNU IceCat and ungoogled-chromium as browser options. Notably, the distro launches in 2026 on a kernel base from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS while Linux 7.0 upstream is releasing the same day. Future plans include laying groundwork for RISC-V architecture support.
