Training AI on Mastodon posts? That idea's extinct

Mastodon has updated its terms of service to explicitly ban the use of user content for training large language models, joining other platforms like Bluesky in pushing back against AI data scraping. However, enforcement remains challenging due to the decentralized nature of the Fediverse, as the restrictions only apply to Mastodon's own instances. The move comes amid growing concerns about unauthorized AI training data collection, with Reddit recently suing Anthropic over alleged content scraping violations while simultaneously signing lucrative data-sharing deals with OpenAI and Google.
