Toyota Connected North America has unveiled Fluorite, an open-source game engine designed to power digital cockpit experiences in vehicles. Built with integration for both Flutter and Dart, Fluorite aims to deliver console-grade performance while being optimized for the low-end hardware typically found in automotive environments.
Fluorite utilizes C++ with an Entity Component System (ECS) architecture and employs Google’s Filament for its 3D rendering capabilities. The engine also incorporates SDL3 for system integration and is set to include Jolt Physics, allowing for nuanced simulation and interaction within 3D spaces. Designed to run on Yocto Linux with Wayland, Fluorite offers a familiar environment for developers accustomed to working within the Linux ecosystem.
Toyota’s decision to develop their bespoke engine comes as a response to the limitations and costs associated with existing engines like Unity, Unreal, and Godot. Concerns over licensing fees, substantial resource requirements, and performance inefficiencies were key factors in the rejection of these popular alternatives. Fluorite, by contrast, provides a customizable solution with hot reload capabilities and Blender-centric workflows that cater specifically to the needs of automotive interfaces.
While the engine is robust enough to target consoles, desktops, and mobile platforms, it was explicitly crafted with Toyota vehicles in mind. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is among the first models to feature this technology in its cockpit, marking a significant step forward in in-vehicle digital experiences.
Fluorite was presented at the FOSDEM 2026 conference, signaling Toyota’s commitment to open-source collaboration. However, as of now, the source code and comprehensive documentation for Fluorite have not been released to the public.
