Most AI agents rely solely on vector databases for memory, which fails for multi-hop queries requiring relational reasoning. A three-layer memory architecture is proposed: relational (provenance), vector (semantic retrieval), and graph (reasoning over connections). The open-source tool Cognee implements this via an ECL pipeline that writes to all three stores simultaneously, with added features like entity resolution and local-first defaults.
