Researchers at Rice University discovered that Thomas Edison may have accidentally created graphene in the 1880s while testing carbon-based filaments for light bulbs. By heating carbon-based resistors to over 2,000°C, Edison's experiments could have produced turbostratic graphene, though he wouldn't have known to look for it or understand its significance. This parallels Edison's earlier observation of the thermionic effect, which he noted as a curiosity but didn't fully understand until Fleming's work in 1904.
