Quantum computers face a fundamental challenge called the 'measurement wall': observing a qubit to check for errors collapses its wave function, destroying the quantum state. Researchers at ETH Zurich have made progress by using a technique called lattice surgery, which uses microwave pulses to stitch together large blocks of quantum data (lattices) and measure the relationships between them rather than the qubits directly. This allows error detection and correction without triggering a collapse, potentially moving quantum computing from theoretical research toward practical engineering.
