Anthropic has been the only AI company with access to US classified government systems, but tensions arose when the government demanded unrestricted use of the technology. Anthropic drew two firm lines: no surveillance of US citizens and no autonomous weapons without human oversight. The US Department of Defense, under Pete Hegseth, pushed back and threatened to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk — an unprecedented move against a US company — unless they backed down by Friday. Anthropic's leadership publicly reiterated their position. Meanwhile, xAI's Grok has now also secured a deal to operate within classified Pentagon systems, giving the government an alternative. A separate New Scientist study also found that AI models recommend nuclear strikes in 95% of war game simulations.
