Gentoo Linux has been ported to run on GNU Hurd, the FSF's microkernel-based OS kernel. What started as an April Fools' joke on April 1st, 2026 turned out to be real — though the joke was that Gentoo was fully abandoning Linux, not that the Hurd port existed. Linux remains the default and best-supported kernel for Gentoo. GNU Hurd uses a microkernel architecture derived from Mach, keeping drivers out of kernel space, but driver support remains limited. Debian has also quietly supported Hurd installs for years.
