Microsoft Windows dominates the PC desktop market primarily because it is the default operating system installed on most new desktops and laptops. This long-standing practice has led many consumers to equate PCs with Windows, unaware of other operating systems like Linux. Challenges with Linux often stem from user habits formed around Windows, hardware and software vendor lock-in, and selecting less-supported Linux distributions.

Bill Gates made a genius “cheap windows on every machine sold” deal with the big PC manufacturers 40+ years ago. That planted the seed. The sustaining force that kept it going was that software vendors targeted it. It was specifically high quality games. Without this domination of the gaming market, it is highly unlikely windows would have survived this long. Linux, et al can all run browsers.

If you really wanted one reason you could’ve mentioned Office. As crappy as Office can be, LibreOffice and the like are not as user friendly as the original thing. Which brings me to another point I made before, there are (seem to be) very few designers in the open source world.
And while I was writing this I decided to do a check on my current Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS, and lo and behold, WPS Office is available which gives all other office options on Linux and Windows a run for their money, so maybe this point is also mute after all 😊

IMHO it’s not a primary reason. Windows is primary choice in business world because it supports group policies and thus allowing effective computer management within organisation.
