Senator Ron Wyden has again warned from the Senate floor that a secret legal interpretation of Section 702 of FISA exists that will 'stun' the American public when declassified. Wyden, who has a perfect track record on such warnings (his 2011 PATRIOT Act warning preceded the Snowden revelations), says Congress is about to vote on reauthorization without knowing the law's actual meaning. He also highlights how the last reauthorization's 'reforms' have failed: sensitive surveillance searches were overseen by conspiracy theorist Dan Bongino, the FBI refuses to even keep a spreadsheet tracking those searches, and a provision expanding who can be forced to spy for the government now sits in the hands of an administration that made no promises of restraint. Wyden warns that the intelligence community will again manufacture a last-minute deadline to prevent real debate.
