The annual global electricity review by energy think tank Ember suggests that the amount of electricity and greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired power plants likely peaked in 2023. A record 30 percent of electricity globally came from renewable sources of energy last year, with solar and wind power contributing significantly. The US is propping up gas usage instead of transitioning to cleaner energy, and its reliance on gas-powered electricity generation is hindering progress towards a cleaner power system.
