The initial optimism about tech and its potential to improve lives has faded. Despite some benefits like increased political awareness and connectivity, tech now often exacerbates social issues such as misinformation, disinformation, economic inequality, and environmental harm. Companies continue to push a utopian vision that fails to materialize, while engaging in practices that contradict their marketed images. Additionally, various tech giants and VCs have supported right-wing policies, further diverging from the progressive ideals they promote.

What about the goal of coming together to share knowledge and help everyone get better access to education? I think the internet undeniably helped with Wikipedia, YouTube tutorials, specialized blogs, forums and more - but now, the forums and specialized indie websites and blogs have been dying and are strongly de-prioritized by search engines, therefore hard to find 11. Informational posts on social media are walled off behind login screens12. At the same time, it is the top breeding ground for disinformation13, aided by AI that hallucinates information14. Together with the Fake News President, I’ve seen our time described as the “post-truth era” 15. Consumerism has killed the tech fantasy. How can you be inspired by tech when companies constantly try to shove ads to your face and bots try to scam you 24/7, while you watch brilliant inventions fail because there’s no money to make out of them.
