The PostgreSQL elephant logo 'Slonik' has a fascinating origin story rooted in 1990s St. Petersburg. Created by Russian designers Dmitry Samersov and Ekaterina Papchinskaya in 1999, the logo was inspired by David Yang's suggestion to use an elephant mascot (referencing Agatha Christie's 'Elephants Can Remember'). The diamond-shaped design and blue elephant were later refined by Swedish developer Daniel Lundin into the vector version we know today. The name 'Slonik' (Russian for 'little elephant') stuck when the original file was shared with the community, eventually inspiring the naming of the Slony-I replication system. After years in legal limbo, the rights were officially transferred to the PostgreSQL community in 2025.
