<p>The article does a good job explaining the high level motivation for L2s and the basic distinction between optimistic and zk rollups, but I think one nuance that is often missing in these discussions is that rollups are not simply “scaling layers”, they are <em>new consensus environments that inherit security from L1 under very specific assumptions</em>. The real engineering question is not just throughput but how the system preserves state validity under adversarial conditions. Optimistic rollups rely on a dispute game and fraud proofs with bounded liveness assumptions, while zk rollups move that burden into proof systems and circuit constraints, which shifts complexity from economic game theory to cryptographic verification costs. In practice this means the tradeoffs are not simply speed vs security but prover cost, latency of finality, data availability guarantees, and operational decentralization of sequencers. I would also be curious to see more discussion about the current bottleneck around centralized sequencing and how upcoming designs like shared sequencing or based rollups may change the architecture of the L2 ecosystem.
