Raspberry Pi has announced a new 3 GB RAM model of the Raspberry Pi 4, using two 1.5 GB LPDDR4 chips as a workaround for the ongoing RAM shortage (dubbed 'RAMpocalypse'). Alongside this, price increases are hitting RPi 4 and 5 models with 4 GB or more RAM, with bumps ranging from $25 to $150. The RPi 5 with 16 GB now costs $300. Hobbyist commentators like Jeff Geerling note that SBCs are becoming unaffordable for many makers. As an alternative, MCUs like ESP32 variants remain affordable and capable for projects not requiring a full OS.
