Qualcomm has agreed to supply ByteDance with millions of AI-focused application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and help the TikTok parent bring its own internally designed chip to volume production. The deal is structured to stay within US Commerce Department export-control thresholds, making it legally defensible in a way that direct Nvidia GPU sales to China are not. For Qualcomm, ByteDance represents a major early customer as it attempts to break into the AI data-centre market dominated by Nvidia and hyperscaler custom silicon. For ByteDance, the arrangement provides inference compute while navigating both US export restrictions and Beijing's tightening controls on foreign capital and AI talent. The deal is expected to ramp through 2026 and 2027 and positions Qualcomm as a parallel alternative to Huawei for Chinese AI hardware needs.
