The traditional mentor-protégé relationship in tech is breaking down due to two simultaneous shifts: AI rewriting software development and a multi-generational workforce collision. Three cohorts face distinct challenges — Elder Millennials (born 1981-1989) have a narrowing window to leverage their adaptability and pattern recognition as bridges; the Squeezed Middle (late Millennials/early Gen Z) are caught between lacking seniority and lacking native AI fluency, held back by ego around prior skills; and Young Builders (late Gen Z/Gen Alpha) have tool fluency but need soft skills and judgment. The key insight is that knowledge no longer flows in one direction from experienced to inexperienced — both mentors and protégés must submit to being taught, and the common thread across all groups is staying curious without needing to have things figured out.
