Most platform teams start with a single cluster doing everything. Control logic, workloads, CI pipelines, observability, all running together. It is the pragmatic starting point and there is nothing wrong with it.
But it creates a hidden coupling problem. When your build pipeline hammers the cluster during a big release, your production workloads feel it. When you want to scale observability independently, you can’t without touching everything else. When a compliance requirement asks you to isolate certain workloads, you are refactoring the entire platform.
The lesson: planes are how you escape that coupling
A mature IDP separates concerns into independently deployable planes.
A control plane that holds the brain of the platform. It knows what should exist, reconciles desired state, and orchestrates everything else. It never runs your workloads directly.
A data plane where your actual workloads live. Isolated per environment, per tenant, or per cluster depending on your topology. Scales independently of the control layer.
A workflow plane that runs your CI pipelines and automation. Decoupled from production workloads so a heavy build job never competes with a live service.
An observability plane that ingests logs, metrics, and traces. Kept separate so you can scale it, swap backends, or feed it from multiple data planes without touching core platform logic.
This multi-plane architecture provides flexible deployment topologies across multiple clusters and cloud providers, letting you scale and evolve at your own pace without re-architecting the entire platform as requirements change.
The payoff is not just scalability. It is that each plane has a clear operational boundary. Your on-call engineer knows exactly which plane an incident belongs to. Your security team can audit the control plane independently. Your platform can grow from a single cluster to a multi-cloud fleet without a rewrite.
