Many developers misunderstand the context window percentage indicator in Cursor and other AI coding tools, leading to poor performance. The percentage shows how much of the AI model's memory is being used in the current chat session. When it reaches high levels (near 100%), the AI summarizes earlier messages to free up space, losing important details and becoming less reliable. The solution is to clear chat history after completing each feature, which resets the context window while allowing the AI to scan current project files. Using project rules can help maintain important context across new chat sessions without bloating the memory usage.
