Onyx, an open-source deep research system with 30k GitHub stars, ranks No. 1 on DeepResearch Bench by using a counterintuitive architectural constraint: the orchestrator agent has no search access. This forces it to write focused, self-contained task briefs rather than prematurely answering queries itself. The system uses a two-level, three-phase pipeline — query decomposition into up to 6 research directions, parallel dispatch of 3 isolated research agents each running up to 8 sub-cycles, and a deterministic citation deduplication step. Keeping the architecture shallow prevents information distortion across agent layers. Unlike proprietary alternatives from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, Onyx also supports enterprise document sources like Confluence and Slack with permission enforcement.
