The running costs of Wikipedia are a tiny fraction of the amount raised each year. In the 2012/13 year the Foundation budgeted for $1.9m to provide all it’s 100% true. It seems that many ‘charities’ separate out into volunteers to do the actual work and a professional layer of ‘managers’ who are often well paid.

Great summary. It is not about being unwilling to give for good causes. It is about the principle of how NGO’s work and gathering stores of wealth where it does neither the platform nor its contributors any good.

My constant desire to “give back” prompted me to pledge an amount on the first of the month from my salary account - which is maintained to prevent anybody stealing or scamming large unexpected sums of money. I transfer money from this account into another account so that there is only ever enough in the account to handle expected payments. This way unexpected transactions get flagged and I get notified.
My first payment went off on the 1st of the particular month and then I noticed a flagged transaction around the 28th of the next month.
I asked them why they did not respect my finances as much as I respected their need for resources. If they did, they would not try to process another payment not on the first day of the month, or even wait a proper 30 days before processing another payment.
Reading this now makes me realise how important it is to do “due diligence” in all cases - even (and perhaps especially) when you think it comes from a known and benign source.
