Google is introducing two new developer capabilities for Android to support AI-driven app interactions. AppFunctions is a new Jetpack library and platform API that lets Android apps expose structured, self-describing functions to AI agents like Gemini, enabling natural language task execution on-device—similar to MCP for cloud backends. A complementary UI automation framework allows AI agents to perform multi-step tasks on any installed app without requiring developer integration. Both features are launching in early/beta stages on Galaxy S26 and select Pixel 10 devices, with broader rollout planned for Android 17.
