The Human Bottleneck

AI-augmented development is generating code faster than humans can review it, creating a new bottleneck at the pull request stage. Eliminating human review to clear the queue introduces serious risks: security vulnerabilities, compliance issues, architectural drift, testing blind spots, and erosion of codebase comprehension. Strategies to manage this include right-sizing review rigor to actual risk, balancing short-term velocity against future friction, and leveraging tooling such as AI-driven PR reviews, next-gen SAST tools, shift-left testing, pre-commit automation, and stacked PRs. The key insight is that accountability cannot be delegated to AI — the goal is to elevate human reviewers with better tooling, not remove them from the loop.
