Fantastic article. I agree with every point made. The highlight for me is the quote: “The true mark of an experienced programmer is not dogmatic adherence to past practices but the ability to critically evaluate and adopt the tools and practices best suited to each specific situation.” This concept is applicable to everyday thinking, not just in software engineering.

“Leave your ego at the weardrobe when entering the office, for the sake of the product, the project, the company.” is what my investor and mentor taught me.
You are supposed to use the best tool for a task, not alternate the task so you can use YOUR tool. Be open to progrss, save time, achieve more.

Good article. I would suggest the authors comments on AI are incomplete. They can (sort of) do what he suggests but they are not yet well grounded. Yes, experiment but using them for large blocks of code is still incomplete. Continue to monitor for future advancements but don’t invest heavily yet. And don’t use them to learn from, they make mistakes and you may not know enough to notice them.

I see myself as a hardcore programmer like any GenX would be if their first programming language was Z80 assembler with a hex keypad :-), right now I am learning RISC-V bare metal on a Sparkfun Red-V board.
I avoid dogmas like Agile, DDD, design patterns, … each application needs a specific design for that product, there is no one size fits all situation.
That said, I use every tool available to help me code. I use chatGPT to help me write RISC-V macros for strlen(), strcopy(), strcat(),… From this result I make it even better if I can.
I don’t believe in this “I’m a pure developer and I don’t use any impure tools” way of thinking because it prevents you from achieving your goal = coding.
For example, I use VS code that has an ssh into the Raspberry pie that is connected to the SparkFun Red-V board. At work I use Resharper, which helps me find code and helps me improve the code in my projects. I use tools like SmartGit to help me jump to different projects and branches instantly. I use Gitkraken to clean up git projects where SmartGit fails. I use Beyond Compare to quickly find differences in files and folders.
